The IPL 2027 mini auction will be held in Goa in December 2026. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the host state and month while speaking to ANI on September 23.
The announcement brings the auction back to India after three overseas editions in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The last auction held in India was in Kochi in December 2022, ahead of IPL 2023.
Goa’s selection settles the location question, but fans will have to wait a little longer for the final auction date.
When will the IPL 2027 auction take place?
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI that Goa had been finalised and indicated December 15 or 16 as the likely timing. He also described the mini auction as a one-day event.
The exact date is still tentative. The reference to December 15 and 16 should not be read as confirmation of a two-day auction.
| Detail | Latest position as of September 23, 2026 |
|---|---|
| IPL season | 2027 |
| Auction format | Mini auction |
| Host | Goa, India |
| Auction month | December 2026 |
| Likely timing | Around December 15 or 16, subject to confirmation |

The auction carries the IPL 2027 name because it is for the following season, even though the bidding will happen in the 2026 calendar year.
Why is IPL 2027 having a mini auction?
The latest mega auction was held for IPL 2025. The upcoming event is a smaller auction within the IPL’s 2025 to 2027 player-regulation cycle.
A mini auction gives franchises the chance to strengthen their squads while keeping much of the team they have already built. A side might look for an opening batter, an extra fast bowler or cover for a particular position, depending on its available places and budget.
The difference is visible in the previous season’s retention list. Before the IPL 2026 auction, Punjab Kings retained 21 players, while Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans retained 20 each. Teams were adding to existing squads rather than starting again with only a handful of players.
That is also why the number of available squad places matters as much as the money a franchise can spend.
Recent IPL auction dates and venues
Here are the main player auctions for the ten IPL seasons from 2017 to 2026, listed from newest to oldest. The date column shows when the auction actually happened, which is sometimes the year before the IPL season.
| IPL season | Auction date | Venue | City and country | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 16 December 2025 | Etihad Arena | Abu Dhabi, UAE | Mini |
| 2025 | 24 and 25 November 2024 | Abady Al Johar Arena | Jeddah, Saudi Arabia | Mega |
| 2024 | 19 December 2023 | Coca-Cola Arena | Dubai, UAE | Mini |
| 2023 | 23 December 2022 | Grand Hyatt Hotel | Kochi, India | Mini |
| 2022 | 12 and 13 February 2022 | ITC Gardenia | Bengaluru, India | Mega |
| 2021 | 18 February 2021 | ITC Grand Chola | Chennai, India | Mini |
| 2020 | 19 December 2019 | ITC Royal Bengal | Kolkata, India | Mini |
| 2019 | 18 December 2018 | Marriott Hotel and Spa | Jaipur, India | Mini |
| 2018 | 27 and 28 January 2018 | ITC Gardenia | Bengaluru, India | Mega |

For example, the Jeddah auction took place in November 2024 but was for IPL 2025. The same distinction applies to the upcoming Goa event in December 2026 for IPL 2027.
IPL auction returns to India after three overseas editions
Dubai began the recent overseas run when it hosted the IPL 2024 auction at Coca-Cola Arena. The event then moved to Jeddah for the IPL 2025 mega auction and Abu Dhabi for the IPL 2026 mini auction.
Goa will follow those three venues. It will be the first auction in India since the Kochi event on December 23, 2022.
Has Goa hosted an IPL auction before?
Yes. Goa hosted the auction for the second IPL season on February 6, 2009.
Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were the standout purchases at that event, with both attracting bids of US$1.55 million. Pietersen went to Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Chennai Super Kings signed Flintoff.
The planned December event will therefore bring the auction back to a state that was part of the league’s early auction history.
What will decide each team’s auction budget?
A franchise’s remaining budget and vacant squad places shape what it can do at a mini auction. Its retained players, releases and completed trades are important parts of that picture.
A team’s budget at the last auction does not tell us how much it will have available for IPL 2027. Player lists also develop in stages, from registration to the final auction list and then the bidding itself.
For fans following a particular team, the useful details will be its confirmed retained and released players, remaining budget, vacant places and the final auction pool. Those details will show where each franchise can strengthen its squad once bidding begins in Goa.
