How Many ODIs Can Virat Kohli Play Before the 2027 World Cup? Series, Dates and Venues

Virat Kohli ODI schedule

Virat Kohli ODI schedule

Virat Kohli's ODI schedule includes 12 confirmed India fixtures before the 2027 World Cup, counting from 2 October 2026. A reported six-match series in South Africa could take that bilateral total to 18, with the Asia Cup and World Cup offering further opportunities. Here is the series-by-series schedule, what remains unconfirmed and what Kohli has said about his future.

The number of India matches is not a guaranteed number of Kohli appearances. Selection, fitness, rest and changes to the calendar will decide how many he actually plays.

Has Virat Kohli confirmed his retirement after the 2027 World Cup?

Kohli has said that the 2027 tournament will be his last World Cup for India. The ICC reported his comments from a JioStar interview on 26 September 2026, in which he spoke about his aim of winning the trophy.

However, that statement does not give a specific date for retirement from all international cricket. Describing the World Cup final as his confirmed farewell would go beyond what the quoted interview establishes.

He has already retired from Tests and T20 internationals. That makes India's ODI calendar the relevant schedule for his remaining international opportunities, but there is no confirmed final career match count.

India's ODI series before the 2027 World Cup

This table counts only fixtures still ahead as of 2 October 2026. The South Africa proposal and Asia Cup window carry separate status labels because they should not be confused with fully dated bilateral schedules.

Series or tournament When Host India's ODIs Status
West Indies series, final match 3 October 2026 India 1 remaining Confirmed fixture
New Zealand series 4 to 15 November 2026 New Zealand 5 Confirmed schedule
Sri Lanka series 13 to 19 December 2026 India 3 Confirmed schedule
Zimbabwe series 3 to 9 January 2027 India 3 Confirmed schedule
Asia Cup Reported window: 18 June to 4 July 2027 Bangladesh, as reported Not included in the fixed total India's match-by-match itinerary still needs confirmation
South Africa series Before the 2027 World Cup; exact dates unannounced South Africa 6 reported Reported by The Indian Express; full board itinerary awaited

The four dated bilateral assignments add up to 12 ODIs: 1 + 5 + 3 + 3. Adding the reported South Africa series gives 18 bilateral opportunities, provided that tour goes ahead as described.

That is a count of the fixtures identified here, not a ceiling on how many India can arrange before the tournament.

West Indies: one ODI remains on 3 October

India's current West Indies series has one match left, in New Chandigarh on 3 October 2026. The scheduled start is 2 pm IST.

The first two ODIs, on 27 and 30 September, are already over. Counting the whole three-match series again would therefore overstate the number of games Kohli has left from today.

New Zealand: five ODIs in November 2026

India are scheduled to play a five-match ODI series in New Zealand. The latest announced itinerary has five ODIs, so older lists showing only three should not be used for this calculation.

Match Date Venue city
1st ODI 4 November 2026 Auckland
2nd ODI 7 November 2026 Wellington
3rd ODI 10 November 2026 Hamilton
4th ODI 13 November 2026 Mount Maunganui
5th ODI 15 November 2026 Mount Maunganui

The wider tour also includes T20Is and Tests. Those games do not add to Kohli's ODI total.

For India, five matches against the same opponent provide more room to test a batting order and different combinations than a short three-game series. Kohli's participation in each match will still depend on selection and availability.

Sri Lanka: three home ODIs in December 2026

India will host Sri Lanka for three ODIs before the teams move to the T20I leg. All three ODI starts are scheduled for 2 pm IST.

Match Date Venue city
1st ODI 13 December 2026 Delhi
2nd ODI 16 December 2026 Bengaluru
3rd ODI 19 December 2026 Ahmedabad

These are home matches, rather than a tour of Sri Lanka. That distinction matters when looking at how much overseas preparation India have before the World Cup.

Zimbabwe: three home ODIs in January 2027

Zimbabwe's visit gives India another three ODI fixtures at the start of 2027. The announced start time for each match is 2 pm IST.

Match Date Venue city
1st ODI 3 January 2027 Kolkata
2nd ODI 6 January 2027 Hyderabad
3rd ODI 9 January 2027 Mumbai

This series is in India. It should not be described as preparation played in Zimbabwe, even though Zimbabwe is one of the World Cup hosts.

South Africa: six ODIs reported before the World Cup

The Indian Express has reported that India plan to arrive in South Africa early and play six ODIs against the Proteas before the World Cup. Its report names Johannesburg, Cape Town and Centurion among the intended venues.

The six games are a separate bilateral series against South Africa. They are not India's World Cup matches or a list of six practice games against different teams.

A complete BCCI or Cricket South Africa itinerary with individual dates and venue allocations was not available in the announcements checked for this article. The series therefore belongs in the reported part of the schedule, without invented September dates or match timings.

If confirmed, it would give India an extended period of competitive cricket in the host country. That would offer a useful chance to settle combinations and adapt to local conditions before the tournament begins.

Will Kohli play ODIs in Australia before the World Cup?

A new senior men's India ODI tour of Australia before the 2027 World Cup could not be verified from the official schedules checked. It should not be added to the total as a confirmed three-match or five-match series.

The familiar three-ODI trip to Perth, Adelaide and Sydney took place in October 2025. Those matches are in the past and cannot count towards the games still ahead from October 2026.

Australia's announced visit to India from January to March 2027 is a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. It contributes no ODIs to this calculation.

India do have a confirmed World Cup group match against Australia, on 7 October 2027 in Cape Town. That is a tournament fixture in South Africa, rather than a bilateral match in Australia.

Could the Asia Cup add more ODIs?

Yes. The 2027 Asia Cup is expected to be another part of India's ODI preparation. ABP Live, citing Cricbuzz, reported a Bangladesh window of 18 June to 4 July, with Mirpur, Chattogram and Sylhet under consideration.

However, that report is not a final India fixture list. Published previews also differ over the number of teams and matches, so this article does not add an assumed six or seven appearances to Kohli's total.

India's eventual Asia Cup count will depend on the confirmed format, their progress and Kohli's selection. Any rescheduled Bangladesh bilateral series would also need its own announcement before being added.

How many games could Kohli play at the World Cup?

India have five group fixtures in the ICC's released schedule. Reaching the Super 7 would add six games, with a semi-final and final taking a finalist's total to 13.

India's group opponent Date in 2027 Venue city
Australia 7 October Cape Town
Pakistan 10 October Johannesburg
Afghanistan 14 October Tshwane
Qualifier A 17 October Bloemfontein
Zimbabwe 24 October Victoria Falls

The final is on 21 November in Johannesburg. India's qualification for later rounds and Kohli's appearances are conditional; neither can be guaranteed from the fixture list.

What is the total through the 2027 World Cup?

The clearest answer is to show the assumptions behind each figure rather than give Kohli a fixed number of matches left in his career.

Scenario from 2 October 2026 India ODI opportunities
Confirmed remaining bilateral fixtures listed above 12
Those fixtures plus the reported South Africa series 18
Those 18 plus India's five World Cup group games 23
Those 18 plus a complete World Cup run to the final 31

The figures of 18, 23 and 31 all depend on the reported six-match South Africa series happening. They exclude the Asia Cup, any further bilateral additions and World Cup warm-up matches.

Kohli could therefore have more opportunities than the fixed bilateral schedule currently shows. The next details that will make the count clearer are South Africa's full itinerary and India's confirmed Asia Cup programme. His actual appearances will depend on how many of those matches he is selected and available to play.
