Rohit Sharma could reach 12,000 ODI runs and break two age-related century records during India’s upcoming ODI series against West Indies. The three-match contest, starting on September 27, also gives him a chance to set new marks as an opener and add several fours and sixes milestones to his name.

The 39-year-old has been selected in India’s squad, with Shubman Gill leading the side. Rohit enters the series with 11,895 ODI runs, leaving him just 105 short of one of the biggest targets on his list.

His most recent ODI innings was 138 against England at Lord’s on July 19. Another substantial contribution against West Indies could take him past more than one milestone in the same match.

These figures are current as of September 24, 2026. The comparisons below cover men’s international cricket. Records listed under opening batting count only innings played at No. 1 or No. 2.

105 runs away from 12,000 ODI runs

Rohit has scored 11,895 runs in 280 ODI innings across 288 matches. Another 105 runs would make him the seventh batter to reach 12,000 in the format.

He would join Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene. Among Indians, he would be the third to get there after Tendulkar and Kohli.

There is a second record attached to this target. Kohli reached 12,000 runs in 242 innings, while Tendulkar took 300. If Rohit reaches the mark against West Indies, he would do so in his 281st, 282nd or 283rd innings and move ahead of Tendulkar into second place for the fewest innings taken.

The 105 runs can come across the series. He does not need to score them in a single innings.

135 runs away from the fastest 10,000 as an ODI opener

Rohit’s overall ODI tally includes runs scored lower down the order. When only his opening innings are counted, he has 9,865 runs from 199 innings.

He therefore needs 135 more runs while opening to reach 10,000. Only Tendulkar, Jayasuriya and Chris Gayle have reached that mark as ODI openers.

Tendulkar reached it in 214 opening innings, Gayle in 268 and Jayasuriya in 303. Rohit could get there in his 200th, 201st or 202nd opening innings during this series, which would make him the fastest of the group.

His batting position matters here. Any runs scored outside the opening pair would count towards his overall 12,000-run target, but would not move him closer to 10,000 as an opener.

One century to become the oldest ODI centurion against West Indies

Jayasuriya holds this record after scoring 115 against West Indies at Providence on April 1, 2007. The Sri Lankan opener was 37 years and 275 days old during that World Cup match.

Rohit, born on April 30, 1987, will be 39 years and 150 days old when the first ODI begins. A century in any of the three matches would move him past Jayasuriya.

This is an opposition-specific record. It concerns hundreds scored against West Indies, wherever the match takes place.

One century to break Gavaskar’s age record in India

The same hundred could also make Rohit the oldest batter to score a men’s ODI century on Indian soil, and the first to do so aged 39 or older.

Sunil Gavaskar currently holds the record. He was 38 years and 113 days old when he scored an unbeaten 103 against New Zealand at Nagpur on October 31, 1987.

Rohit has already made an ODI century after turning 39. His 138 at Lord’s came at 39 years and 80 days, making him India’s oldest men’s ODI centurion. A hundred against West Indies would extend that Indian record and add the separate record for a century scored in India.

One more hundred to lead India’s openers against West Indies

Rohit and Tendulkar have three ODI centuries each against West Indies while opening. Another hundred at the top of the order would give Rohit four and the outright Indian record in this category.

His previous three hundreds against West Indies were all big innings on home grounds:

ScoreGroundDate
152 not outGuwahatiOctober 21, 2018
162Brabourne Stadium, MumbaiOctober 29, 2018
159VisakhapatnamDecember 18, 2019

Guwahati is also hosting the second ODI of the upcoming series. Rohit could return to a ground where he has already scored a substantial hundred against this opposition.

A century would also take his overall ODI hundred count from 34 to 35. The opening record has a narrower definition, so it should not be confused with the most ODI centuries against West Indies from all batting positions.

185 opening runs to pass Tamim Iqbal against West Indies

Tamim Iqbal leads the list of ODI runs scored against West Indies as an opener, with 1,208. Rohit has 1,024, putting him 184 runs behind the former Bangladesh batter.

That means 184 more opening runs would draw him level, while 185 would take him to 1,209 and put him ahead.

Rohit is also level with Tendulkar on 1,024 in this category. One more run while opening against West Indies would therefore give him the outright Indian lead before he reaches the larger target set by Tamim.

Across all batting positions, Rohit has 1,613 ODI runs against West Indies. The difference between that total and his opening tally is why the record needs to be described carefully.

38 runs in victories to pass David Warner

Rohit has scored 12,242 international runs as an opener in matches his team won. David Warner leads that list with 12,279.

Another 37 runs would bring Rohit level, while 38 would take him ahead. These figures combine Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

For this record, India’s result matters as much as Rohit’s score. If he scores 38 while opening and India win, he would move past Warner. Runs made in a defeat, tie or no-result would not count towards this particular total.

The required runs can also come across more than one victory. This is an all-format international record, not the record for opening runs in ODI wins alone.

18 fours to reach 2,000 in international cricket

Rohit has hit 1,982 fours across his international career. His tally consists of 473 in Tests, 1,126 in ODIs and 383 in T20Is.

He needs another 18 to reach 2,000. If he bats in all three matches, that would require an average of six fours per innings, although he could reach the target sooner.

The milestone is specifically about fours. Sixes do not count towards it. Rohit already has 662 international sixes, so his combined tally of fours and sixes is well beyond 2,000.

There is another opening milestone nearby. Of his ODI fours, 986 have come while opening, leaving him 14 short of 1,000 in that role.

Six sixes to pass AB de Villiers against West Indies

AB de Villiers hit 40 sixes against West Indies in ODIs. Rohit has 35, leaving him five short of a tie and six away from the outright record.

A sixth six in the series would take Rohit to 41 against West Indies. This total includes all of his ODI batting positions, so he does not have to open for the sixes to count.

The target is separate from his career ODI tally of 369 sixes. Here, only those struck against West Indies are included.

Seven sixes to become the first to reach 200 in India

Rohit has hit 193 sixes in ODIs played in India, more than any other batter. Seven more during this home series would make him the first to reach 200.

MS Dhoni is next on the list with 123. Rohit already holds the lead, so the new achievement would be reaching an unprecedented total on Indian grounds.

Every six he hits in this series would count towards both this home-ground milestone and his ODI record against West Indies.

Nine sixes to reach 350 as an ODI opener

When only opening innings are counted, Rohit has 341 ODI sixes. Gayle is next with 328.

Nine more sixes while opening would make Rohit the first batter to reach 350 in that position. Like his 10,000-run opening target, this requires him to bat at No. 1 or No. 2.

A strong series could therefore bring three separate six-hitting achievements: the most ODI sixes against West Indies, 200 ODI sixes in India and 350 ODI sixes as an opener.

12 sixes to reach 100 against West Indies across formats

Rohit has struck 88 sixes against West Indies in international cricket: 14 in Tests, 35 in ODIs and 39 in T20Is.

Another 12 would make him the first batter to reach 100 international sixes against West Indies. He already leads this list, so the target would extend his lead while taking him to a new landmark.

It is a larger ask than the other six-hitting targets. Twelve across three innings would require four per innings on average, assuming he gets to bat in each match.

Other personal milestones within reach

Beyond the main records, Rohit can add to several career totals during the series. These are milestones or opportunities to climb a list, rather than all being new world records.

MilestoneCurrent positionRequirement
50 ODI half-centuries as an opener49One score from 50 to 99 while opening
3,000 international runs against West Indies2,884116 runs
5,000 ODI runs as an opener in India4,713287 runs while opening
Third-most ODI runs as an openerRohit 9,865; Gayle 10,179315 runs while opening to pass Gayle
2,000 ODI runs against West Indies1,613387 runs

The final three run targets would require a much bigger series. The 105 runs needed for 12,000 overall and the 135 needed for 10,000 as an opener are closer, while 387 against West Indies would demand a series average of 129 runs per innings if he bats three times.

India vs West Indies ODI series dates and venues

The BCCI has scheduled all three ODIs to start at 2:00 PM IST.

MatchDateVenue cityStart time
First ODISeptember 27, 2026Thiruvananthapuram2:00 PM IST
Second ODISeptember 30, 2026Guwahati2:00 PM IST
Third ODIOctober 3, 2026New Chandigarh2:00 PM IST

Rohit could reach several targets in one innings. For example, a score of 135 or more while opening in an India win would help him reach both major run milestones, break the two age-related century records and move him ahead of Warner for international opening runs in victories.

Which records fall will depend on his performances, batting position and India’s results across the three matches.
