The ICC has made some changes to the format of the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup, which is set to be played in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Two changes stand out: the introduction of a Super Seven stage and a new round called the Super Series.

Round 1: The Super Series

This is the biggest structural addition to the tournament.

The three lowest-ranked qualified sides, like teams 12, 13 and 14, will not go straight into the main draw. Instead, they will play a round-robin Super Series against each other. Only the winner advances.

In effect, the top 11 teams are already through to the main stage. The Super Series decides who takes the 12th and final spot. Two teams are eliminated before the tournament proper even begins.

Round 2: Two Groups of Six (30 matches)

The 12 surviving teams are split into two groups of six, each playing a round-robin. This round consists of 30 matches.

Qualification for the next stage works like this:

  • The top three teams from each group advance directly — six teams in total.
  • The next best-placed team across both groups takes the seventh and final spot.

That last slot is the crucial one. Six teams will miss out on automatic qualification, and the best of them, decided on points and net run rate, will sneak into the next round. Every single match in Round 2 therefore carries weight, because a team’s fate may come down to a run-rate margin against a side in the other group.

Round 3: The Super Seven (21 matches)

The seven qualified teams play a full round-robin in a stage called the Super Seven, spanning 21 matches.

The top four teams from the Super 7 go through to the semi-finals:

  • 1st vs 4th in one semi-final
  • 2nd vs 3rd in the other

The winners meet in the final.

So there is always one place left hanging until the group stage is done. For the teams that finish fourth in their group, the tournament is not over. Their net run rate and their win column can still carry them into the Super Seven, which makes every match in the group stage worth playing for.

What It Means

These rule changes give the early rounds of the World Cup real weight. The Super Series means the bottom three teams have to earn their place before the main event even starts, and the Super Seven means no team in the group stage can afford to coast — because that final floating spot is decided by margins.

2027 ODI World Cup Schedule

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 will be played from 4 October to 21 November 2027 across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with a total of 54 matches. South Africa will host 44 matches across eight venues, while Zimbabwe and Namibia will share the remaining 10. The full match-by-match schedule will be released after March 2027, once the participating teams are finalised through the ICC ODI rankings and the qualification pathway.
